Gyoza Bar

When visiting Japan, I was hooked on gyoza, usually served soft on one side and pan fried on the other, so when I found out about a restaurant that specialises in gyoza, I was over the moon.

Situated in between Leicester Square and Covent Garden, Gyoza Bar is a simple but traditionally decorated Japanese restaurant. Its main emphasis (unsurprisingly) is on gyoza, offering five different kinds – vegetable, chicken, beef, pork and salmon. Combined with a selection of bao buns and ramen, the menu is on to a winner.

We opted for the gyoza party set (£16) with 20 pieces (we just had to try a variety) and you could choose pan fried or deep fried. The fillings were flavoursome and generous – the beef in particular (which I did not have in Japan) was excellent.

We also had the Nan Bun (£5.5) which came with two bao buns that you fill with pulled pork and kimchi. It also came with some crispy Japanese chips which were like large sweet potato fries but better (and saltier!). I would definitely recommend this dish over the chicken katsu bun, which I was initially drawn to but lacked flavour.

The service was friendly and our waiter helped us pick our selection. Good price, relaxed atmosphere and decent food!
